As a promising batsman with a handy sideline in leg breaks, it was no surprise Derbyshire offered Gul Khan a second chance in county cricket after his release from Essex. Khan came to Derby in July 1996 after a wonderful summer term at Oxford, where he had averaged 57.44 in 10 First-class matches. However despite being one of the few students who could hold his own against county opponents, Khan found performing in Derbyshire colours to be a lot harder. After a stuttering start, his nadir came in the crucial championship showdown with Warwickshire. In this match he made 0 and 4, as defeat ended Derbyshires chances of winning the Championship. However, as is often the way, a new season brought a new start. He cracked 67* in the Sunday league against Kent in the April, and a week later he made an undefeated 62, after volunteering to open (in place of the injured Kim Barnett). These were easily his best efforts for the Peakites, although the law of diminishing returns soon ejected him from the team again. Despite this, Derbyshire did offer him terms for the 1998 season, although he declined on the grounds that he wanted a year away from cricket. He was never seen in the county game again.
