Kasir Shah played for Derbyshire after being sponsored by a group of businessmen keen to see young Asian players progress in the professional game. Although some of his early performances with the ball in limited-overs matches in 1999 could be expensive, he did seem to improve and learn how to limit the runs he conceded in the 2000 season. John Crawley and Neil Fairbrother were a notable pair of maiden scalps on his First-class debut, although both Dominic Cork and then stand-in skipper Tim Munton seemed reluctant to bowl him even when selected. As such, it wasnt a big surprise when Shah wasnt offered terms for 2001, even though many members of the squad had hardly performed spectacularly. Shah looked a capable performer with the bat, a tail-ender who would wait for bad balls to score off rather than looking to brainlessly slog.
