Brief profile of Mark Newell
by Matthew Reed

Player:M Newell

DateLine: 22nd November 2005

Mark Newell was one of a number of players in recent seasons who, in 1999, played just one First-class match for Derbyshire. The East Midlanders doubtless remembered Newell after his career best 135* against them for Sussex the previous season. His breakthrough in the county game had come in 1997, when the departure of six capped players during the close season had left the south coast county with holes to fill. Newell decided to leave Hove (along with his older brother Keith) after being offered just a one year contract for 1999, although an average of just under 30 in 1998 hardly screamed out a long term deal. His limited-over batting had been impressive for Sussex, with 8 half centuries from just 35 innings. However, despite a reasonable Championship match for Derbyshire (he made 25 in the Pea kites 1st innings), four completed List A innings for Derbyshire had yielded just 9 runs, and so the lack of a contract offer for 2000 came as no surprise.
