Tim OGorman was a very useful county cricketer whos playing career was cut short by a desire to make use of his brain as well as his batting. OGorman holds a law degree, and it was while working towards this at Durham University that OGorman made his debut for Derbyshire. Despite a slow start to his first team career, he had shown enough in performances for the Second XI, Surrey young cricketers and the University to demonstrate that he may turn into a player of real substance. An undefeated maiden century against Northamptonshire in his first match of the 1989 season meant that his office based career would have to wait. His first two full seasons were successes, in that they contained further centuries and he was able to score 1,000 First-class runs, although his scoring had not come on as heavily as had been hoped. In this he was hamstrung by being a poor starter, and he was frequently dismissed in single figures, although if he got past 15 there was a good chance hed at least go on to a half-century. In the early 1990s there was a general feeling that OGorman hadnt progressed, or shown enough outright potential as fellow young batsman Chris Adams, whom he had preceded in the first team, although OGormans square cutting was still a formidable weapon. His annus horribillis came in 1995, with OGorman not appearing in the Championship after May, after averaging just 15.62 in First-class cricket that year. However, in the second XI he looked (and scored) a class apart, which made his inability to progress to the next level as a high quality county batsman all the more frustrating. Despite featuring prominently (and scoring usefully) in the second half of the 1996 season, OGorman refused the offer of a new contract, deciding that playing cricket had taken up enough of his time. However, he continues to play a significant part in the game, in his role of Chairman of the PCA (Professional Cricketers Association) Group and as a member of the MCCs Cricket and General committees. Outside the game OGorman also holds the position of Company Secretary for The Carphone Warehouse.
