The eagerly-awaited Boxing Day Ashes Test between Australia and England will witness a record crowd as tickets for the first two days of the Melbourne match were sold out within two hours on Wednesday. According to officials tickets for the first four days of the other Test matches were sold out within hours earlier this week.

Cricket Australia chief executive James Sutherland said attendance for each of the first two days at Melbourne was likely to top 90,000. “It is a overwhelming response from fans of both countries. We are looking at not only breaking the record on day one, but day two and possibly later days too,” Sutherland added.

The Australian record for a single day’s attendance at a Test match is 90,800 set in 1960-61, Cricket Australia said. The biggest crowd for an entire Test match is about 350,000 when England played Australia at the MCG in 1936-37.
