Although at Yorkshire for eight seasons Taylor saw little first team action, despite being a regular hauler of runs in reserve team games.
Opportunities did present themselves with the Tykes between 2001 and 2004, but he only made two half centuries in 16 games and by 2005 he was marooned in the reserves while Joe Sayers and Andrew Gale advanced ahead of him.
He joined Derbyshire for the 2006 season on a two year deal, with David Houghton believing the Leeds born batsmen was ready for first team cricket. Playing at number three Taylor rewarded Houghtons faith with a ton against his old club in the C&G trophy and a championship 100 against Glamorgan within a month of the season starting.
While his championship form proved more average over the year, totalling just over 700 runs for the season, Taylor was impressive in one day outings - an area he had little experience of at Yorkshire. In the C&G he hit two centuries and averaged 78 in 8 games while he also impressed with quick fire innings in the Twenty20 and in the end of season pro-40 competition as well.
