Brief profile of Steffan Jones
by John Dobson

Player:PS Jones

DateLine: 14th December 2006

Steffan Jones cricket career was delayed in its commencement by his rugby exploits which saw him play for Swansea and Bristol.

He initially had an eclectic mix of cricket teams with outings for Glamorgan, Wales Minor Counties, Wales, Cambridge University and British Universities before he emerged into the reserves at Somerset.

In early 1998 Jones made an impact taking 3-16 and 5-24 in successive AXA league games and finished the season in one day matches with 20 wickets at less than 20 runs each. Although Jones was to become an integral part of the one day set up from then on it took until 2000 for him to break into the championship side.

The summer seasons of 2000 and 2001 were good years for Jones as he built on his one day success and showed he had the pace and movement to cause trouble in the championship. 2001 saw him haul a highly impressive 59 first class wickets, especially given that much of his cricket was played at the run friendly Taunton.

His remaining two years at Somerset though saw limited action in championship cricket and in 2004 he moved to Northamptonshire. It was not to be a successful change as even his one day opportunities started to dry up.

After two yeas Northants released him and he moved to Derbyshire as part of David Houghton’s new guard at the club. It was the move he needed, after taking 6-25 against his old club Glamorgan in early May he went on to take 56 wickets in the championship.

Jones though returned to Somerset at the end of the 2006 season citing family reasons.
