Player: | MR Gillespie |
DateLine: 19th February 2007
Few players have been promoted with such hype as Mark Gillespie. The rookie fast bowler has been touted as a potential at-the-death bowler and certainly his self-belief is worth emulating by many senior bowlers. He has been quoted as saying "The key is knowing at the top of your mark what youre are doing. Keep it simple, follow through with it and trust yourself". Wise words these particularly from one who is yet to play at the international level. He certainly has an appetite for a challenge. "If I play itll be for keeps and Im excited about that. I would love to get a run", he told reporters in India after being selected for the ICC Champions Trophy. Gillespie earned a place based on good performances around the domestic circuit and for New Zealand A. He has attracted a lot of attention already by his obvious talent and unadulterated bowling skills. Now its up to the team management to harness this talent and the skill and as Scott Styris has said optimistically "its exciting for us that we have another fast bowler coming through in New Zealand cricket who isnt in the 120-130 kmph category".
