With his stylish stroke play and cool temperament Hamish Marshall has been one of the bulwarks of the New Zealand middle order for sometime now. His talent was spotted early and he was given the big break at the age of 21 when he made his Test debut against South Africa in December 2000. He batted at No 7, made an unbeaten 40 and impressed with his poise and promise. For some inexplicable reason he was not picked again for another three years and made his return in the one day series in Pakistan in 2003-04. He at once showed his ability to adapt to limited overs cricket by scoring an unbeaten 101 at Faisalabad in the third ODI. When Pakistan paid a return visit later that season Marshall was in the forefront and with scores of 64 and 84 helped New Zealand to win the series. He also played a major role in helping New Zealand win the home series against South Africa later that season and made the squad for the NatWest Series in England in 2004. He maintained his form scoring 75 not out and 55 in the group matches and contributed a valuable 44 as New Zealand won the final against West Indies. Equally at home in Tests and ODIs Marshall hit maiden Test century in March 2005 against Australia at Christchurch an exemplary anchor knock of 146 against McGrath, Gillespie, Kasprowicz and Warne for which he batted over 5-1/2 hours. A month later came another similiar innings against Sri Lanka at Napier - 160 in about five hours. He had a stint with Gloucestershire in 2006.
