Most of the Bangladesh players are known by their nickname and Pilot is a fitting sobriquet for Khaled Mashud who has been guiding the fortunes of his country in the formative years in international cricket for over a decade. As Bangladeshs first choice wicket keeper batsman for many years, he has been an inspirational figure to many of the young players. Mashud can be both a free stroking batsman in ODIs and can play the sheet anchor role to perfection in Tests. The latter quality was seen in the inaugural Test against India in November 2000 when he dug in to add 93 runs with Aminul Islam for the seventh wicket. Thereafter his useful stints with the bat at No 7 or No 8 have proved invaluable to his team and symbolizing this was his heroic hundred at St Lucia in June 2004. Bangladesh had gained a first innings lead of 64 but faced defeat when they collapsed to 79 for six in the second innings. It was at this critical juncture that Mashud entered. His previous highest score in Tests was 61 but he now summoned up the courage, stamina and technical skill to get an unbeaten 103 that enabled Bangladesh to declare for the first time ever. ``He showed a cool temperament and solid technique in trying circumstances and by the time he reached his hundred driving Gayle through cover point for a 13th boundary the match had long since been saved noted Wisden. In the NatWest series game against Australia in 2005 he hit a career best 71 not out as Bangladesh stretched their opponents before going down. As a wicket keeper Mashud remains tidy instead of showy. He has also led Bangladesh in Tests and ODIs before he quit after the 2003 World Cup.
