With England top heavy as far as their pace battery is concerned only a very special talent can break into the squad. And there is no doubt that Jon Lewis is naturally gifted. Add to that a tall and compactly built frame and the right aggressive attitude for a fast bowler and you have the reasons why the Gloucestershire paceman is so highly rated. A consistent wicket taker in county cricket with his skiddy medium paced outswingers Lewis made a sensational start to his international career when in the Twenty20 game against Australia in 2005 he took four prize wickets “ Ponting, Sydmonds, Clarke and Martyn “ as the visitors were skittled out for 79 leaving England victors by 100 runs. The first three batsmen failed to score as Lewis finished with four for 24 in four overs. His ODI career also started well with three wickets against Bangladesh later that year. He also had a successful Test debut against Sri Lanka at Nottingham in 2006 picking up three wickets, the first of these being taken with his third ball. He has been in and out of the ODI squad generally getting a look in only when the senior fast men are injured. But he has never let the team down and the Champions Trophy could well be the tournament for him to clinch a regular place. He captained Gloucestershire in 2006 and will have his benefit next year.
