In just over a year Runako Morton has made himself an integral part of the West Indian middle order in both forms of the game. He could have made his international debut much earlier but for a series of incidents that reflected allegedly on his indiscipline. But he certainly has made up for lost time. In the handful of Tests he has played so far he has proved his worth but it is in ODIs that he really has made a mark. In a way this is not surprising for he is a free stroking batsman very much in keeping with the Caribbean spirit. But he can also temper his strokeplay with defence should the situation arise. His fighting spirit came through while notching up his maiden ODI hundred against New Zealand in early 2006 that was made in a losing cause. A few months later he hit another hundred against Zimbabwe. But perhaps the innings he will treasure the most is the unbeaten 90 against Australia in the Champions Trophy in India in late 2006 for it paved the way for an upset victory over the world champions. In MortonÂ’s case it can safely be predicted that his best is yet to come for in addition to natural talent and fluent strokes he has the ideal temperament. Astonishingly though he also has an unwanted record when he batted 31 balls for a duck in the final of the DLF Cup against Australia at Kuala Lumpur in 2006 the previous `recordÂ’ standing in the name of Phil Simmons whose duck has consumed 23 balls
