DateLine: 20th February 2007

He has packed a good deal into his brief international career thus far but the highlight will have to be his hat trick against Australia in the Champions Trophy in India in 2006 which cleared the way for an upset ten-run victory for the West Indies. It was the first hat trick by a West Indies bowler in ODIs an honour Jerome Taylor richly deserved. A right arm fast bowler who combines hostility and accuracy Taylor got his big break early being just past his 19th birthday when he played his first ODI and his maiden Test within days of each other against Sri Lanka at home in 2003. It was the culmination of a splendid first season playing for Jamaica picking up 21 wickets at 20 apiece in six first class matches and being named as the most promising fast bowler in the 2003 Carib Beer Series. That haul included a spell of eight for 59 in Jamaica’s five- wicket victory over Trinidad a match in which he took ten wickets for the first time. The following season he picked up another 26 wickets at just over 16 apiece in the Carib Beer Cup and it was obvious that he was not just another fast bowler. After a slow start to his Test career Taylor really shone against the touring Indians in 2006 when he took 14 wickets in three Tests including nine for the match at Kingston. It was a lethal performance on a helpful pitch for he got the ball to rear repeatedly off a good length. Two four-wicket hauls in ODI’s underline his striking power and Taylor bids fair to be the West Indian spearhead for a long time.
