Glamorgan Cricket confirmed today that Matthew Maynard will take up the newly created position of Cricket Manager with the Club at the end of September.

Maynard, 41, played in nearly 750 matches for Glamorgan from 1985-2005, leading the side to the County Championship title in 1997 and playing a significant part in one-day titles in 1993, 2002 and 2004. He also captained the county in its first appearance in a major Lord’s Final in 2000 and played 4 Test matches and 14 One-Day Internationals for England. Since retiring as a player in 2005 he was Assistant Coach to Duncan Fletcher with the England team until the end of the recent ICC Cricket World Cup.

The appointment means some minor changes to the roles of the two existing coaches, Adrian Shaw and Steve Watkin. Shaw will continue as First XI Coach, working closely with Maynard on First XI matters during the season. Watkin will also continue as Performance Director, but given the very wide remit his present position has, he will relinquish his direct responsibilities as Academy Director in order to be able to concentrate more on working with the contracted players, especially the bowlers. Richard Almond, currently National Cricket Centre Manager, and, like Shaw and Watkin an ECB Level 4 qualified Coach, will take on the running of the Under-17 and Academy teams.

The Cricket Manager will be responsible for all elements of cricket and player development at Glamorgan, reporting to the Chief Executive.

Glamorgan Chief Executive Mike Fatkin said: “We’re delighted that Matthew has agreed to rejoin Glamorgan in this new role. His commitment to the county and his record as a player stands comparison with the very best and having now had experience of coaching elite players we believe he is ready to take on this particular challenge.

We are very conscious that in Adrian Shaw and Steve Watkin we have two outstanding young coaches and we have been very keen throughout our discussions to ensure that their talents are utilized in the best possible way. We believe that in the modern game it is difficult for one person to cover all of the requirements and demands of a professional team and because both Matthew and Adrian have similar outlooks on the game we are sure they will operate successfully together.

Steve was an outstanding bowler and is developing into an outstanding bowling coach. We want to put his abilities to best use by working with the bowlers more, but clearly we had to find a way of freeing up his time if we were going to do so. We’re fortunate that in Richard Almond we have another excellent young Level 4 Coach to step up and take on some of Steve’s responsibilities.

The team has struggled over the past three summers and we are confident that these changes will help to provide the platform from which to improve over the next three years. The redevelopment of the ground at Sophia Gardens and the elevation to Category A (Test match) status has provided Glamorgan with a number of productive new income streams and we intend to ensure that the team receives the right level of attention and investment over the next few years in order to help develop the crop of exciting young players coming through.”

Matthew Maynard said: “This is a fantastic opportunity for me and it couldn’t have come at a better time. I am pleased to have, in Adrian and Steve, two people I not only know well but whose cricketing philosophies I understand having played with them both for many years and I’m delighted that both will be continuing in important positions within the organization.

Although I do not formally start in post until the end of the season I will be spending whatever time it takes between now and the end of September consulting with them, and with David Hemp, in terms of how we put together a plan to improve the team’s performances over the next few years.

I’m aware that there is a lot of work required and that it will not be an overnight transformation. However there is plenty of talent within the squad, I genuinely believe that, and we have a group of young cricketers coming through who are as good as any across the domestic game. It will be up to me to get the best out of the players we have, augment them with additions where appropriate, and to work as hard as I can to get Glamorgan back to the level of performance we all – players and supporters – enjoyed in the 1990s and early 2000s. I’m really looking forward to the challenge.”
