The Kiwis are known for their versatility and James Marshall is no different. He made his First Class debut in 1997-98, and since then has been playing the dual role of opener and middle order batsman for both his state as well as national side, based on his strong technical acumen.
However, he has always promised more and not been able to deliver the same amount. This reflects in his statistics, as when he made his test debut, he had scored at only 28.70 in his First Class games. Even while playing for New Zealand, he has not been able to duly deliver in the limited opportunities that he has gotten so far.
He made both his Test and ODI debuts against Australia in 2005, but again, his form has been dismal in the last three years. One reason to be attributed to this is that he has been traveling up & down the order on umpteen occasions, for a lack of better openers in the Kiwi squad. In 5 Tests, he has scored 166 runs at an average of 23.71, which is very decent as compared to a paltry 85 runs in 8 ODIs at 10.47 per innings.
His twin brother Hamish Marshall now plays for the Indian Cricket League.
