DateLine: 5th June 2008

He is the spinner elect in the eyes of the selectors as the one to replace Anil Kumble when the legendary leg spinner retires from the game.

As a 17 year old, he made an immediate impact on his first-class debut and has the rare distinction of dismissing Sachin Tendulkar with a googly in the Challenger trophy. At the 2006 Under-19 World Cup the leg spinner lived up to his already swelled reputation finishing as India's leading wicket taker. He already has plentyful variations and is not afraid to give the ball some air, in order to scalp more wickets. He can bat a bit usefully down the order and one day aspires to be a fine all rounder for the Indian team.

He made his Test debut against England at Mohali but couldn’t hold on to his Test spot thereafter. Soon he received a call-up to the one-day side for India's tour of Bangladesh in May 2007. He took three wickets on debut and fourteen over the summer during India's tour of Ireland and England. Later he was recalled to the Indian ODI squad for the CB series in Australia in 2008.

He was bought by the Mohali franchise, Kings XI Punjab, to play for them in the IPL.
