Late batting partnership revives Ramsbottom
by Webmaster

Scorecard:Ramsbottom v Burnley

DateLine: 12th July 2008

Six wickets apiece by Burnley's James Capstick and Ramsbottom's sub pro on a seaming wicket in overcast conditions, but it was a late order batting honours that gave the home side the incentive needed to record an unlikely victory.

Put into bat, Ramsbottom struggled against the conditions losing wickets at regular intervals. Capstick's brand of seam meant the batsmen had to apply themselves and bat through the overs. Phil Hayes yet again led the way, but he was not well supported. One batsman felt that the gung-ho method would be best, he didn't last long. Simon Read did apply himself well, but he suffered a recurring knee injury and had to be helped off the pitch. The early prognosis is that he could be absent for some weeks.

After the injury at 65 for 7, first Richard Hevingham stayed, then Mick Haslam and Jack Walmsley showed the earlier batters the way. The pair put together an unbeaten 38 taking them through to 50 overs, a quite superb effort from batsmen who had highest scores of 3 and 4 respectably this season. Walmsley's innings of 19 not out was his highest first team score. Mick Haslam also defeated his personal best of 21 scored against Colne in 2006.

Oliver Newby the Lancashire seamer proved hard work for the Burnley batsmen as he took 6 wickets for 34, he was superby assisted by young Jack Walmsley with a brace and Chris Read mopped up the tail.
