| Biography: | He was styled 'Honourable' from 1922 as a son of the second Baron Rothschild of Tring, and succeeded his father as third Baron Rothschild in 1937. Chairman, Shell Research (petrochemicals) and of NM Rothschild and Son (merchant bank); chairman, Agricultural Research Council 1948-58; director-general, Central Policy Review Staff (the government 'think-tank') 1971-74. Awarded George Medal 1944 'for dangerous work in hazardous circumstances', and elected a Fellow of the Royal Society 1953 (the only County Championship cricketer thus honoured) for his work as chairman of the ARC. Appointed GBE 1975 for services to the Cabinet Office. |
