HH Budd replaced R Humphrey due to illness as umpire during day 1, but a disagreement with WG Grace on a scoring shot which apparently hit the boards and rebounded onto the field was disputed by GF Grace who said the ball had hit his foot first. The umpire would not give way and he left the field to be replaced by the original umpire Humphrey.
