McGahey batted for 160 minutes and hit 15 fours in his innings of 130. Warwickshire's all professional side was allowed to overflow into the amateurs' dressing room but Diver was told they must all use the professionals' gate, thus entailing a 30 yard detour. Diver arranged that one batsmen would go through the pro gate, the other through the amateur gate. The farce caused amusement and won the applause of the crowd but upset the Essex secretary. When Warwickshire took the field on the second day Diver marched them all through the pro gate, along the boundary to the amateur gate, and then out onto the field.
