On the opening day - Bank Holiday Monday - 30,891 paid entrance. The start after lunch was delayed until 3.30pm as adequate provision had not been made for such a large crowd. At the luncheon interval on the first day thousands of spectators rushed over the enclosures. The game was twice stopped owing to encroachments on the field of play. Mounted policemen entered the ground and forced the crowd back.
