Owing to cab problems the Fitzroy team arrived about 15 minutes late for the 3rd day's play, only to discover that the umpires had awarded the match to St Kilda upon appeal by the home captain. Pennant rules decreed that play had to start within 10 minutes of the appointed time, or the offending side would lose the match.
