Durham won this low-scoring return match by 27 runs on the second day. The match between the two sides at Sunderland in June had been won by Lancashire 2nd XI. For the winners, Morris took 13 wickets in the match, including 7 for 50 in the Lancashire first innings. For the losers, Sladen took 11 wickets in the match for 134 runs. No batsman scored fifty. This was the first use of this venue for a championship match.
