At the time scheduled for the start of play New Brighton had only seven players, and after a delay of half an hour three substitute fielders were provided by Birkenhead Victoria, thus enabling the match to begin. Meanwhile, three of the 'bowling members' were persuaded to take part in the match, their presence eventually bringing the strength of the home club up to eleven.
