Australia won the toss and will bowl
Australia won the toss and will bowl.
Hello and welcome to the live coverage of the match 40 in the 2007 Cricket World Cup where Australia could regain top spot in the Super Eights table with an expected win over World Cup minnows Ireland in the Super Eights match number 16 from the Kensington Oval in Bridgetown, Barbados.
Only probably the biggest international cricket shock will prevent the all-conquering Australians from extending their winning run while a defeat here will call time on Ireland's great World Cup adventure. They have done so well that their early English season cup game against Gloucestershire has been moved to allow the Irish team to recover. No-one expected them to still be out here when the 2007 domestic fixtures were drawn up.
But you will not see any compassion from the reigning champions. Captain Ricky Ponting has already said that his side will not be complacant given the game is so heavily stacked in their favour. Ireland, though, with their Aussie-born skipper and two other players, Jeremy Bray and David Langford-Smith also from New South Wales, will want to impress.
Who will win? Need you ask! This should be another easy win for the men in green ... and gold !!!
The atmosphere here at the newly redeveloped Kensington Oval should be electric. It's now a 32,000 capacity stadium and the biggest and oldest in the Caribbean. This is just the 21st ODI to be held on this ground since the first in 1985. Granted, the West Indies are not in action here today but they haven't won here in the last eight ODIs since 1999. Bridgetown used to be a fortress for West Indies cricket.
The leading run scorer on this ground is Brian Lara with 515 in 11 matches (average 57.22) while the head wicket-taker is Curtly Ambrose with just 9 from 10 games (average 43.77).
It will come as no surprise that this will be the first time these two sides have met in ODIs. The Aussies were regular visitors to the Emerald Isle on their tours of England, going over in 1985, 1993, 1997 and 2001, winning easily on each occasion bar the last, which was ruined by the rain.
Billy Bowden is joined by Rudi Koertzen in the middle for today's game with Steve Bucknor as the third and Simon Taufel the fourth. Ranjan Madugalle takes charge as the match referee.
