This opening Championship match of the season ended as a draw, with an undefeated second innings ninth wicket partnership of 42 runs between Walker and Phillips denying the home team victory. Rain prevented any play on the second day before 4.15 pm. For Northamptonshire, there were 9 fours in W H Kingston's 88 and 5 fours in H E Kingston's 79, and the pair put on 149 runs for the fifth wicket, a new record for the competition, exceeding the unbroken 143 put on by L G A Collins and F M Ingram for Berkshire in their second innings versus Hertfordshire at Watford in 1896. In the Staffordshire first innings Eales split his hand badly attempting a catch at point. He had to retire and E Scriven fielded as his substitute. Staffordshire did not qualify for the Championship table. This game, and the return one at Aston later on in June were the only two Championship matches played by Staffordshire during the season.
