Durham won by an innings and 37 runs on the second day. For the winners, Mallett's 109 contained 2 sixes, 16 fours, and 6 twos, an innings of around two and a quarter hours. There were 16 fours in Elliot's 83 and 10 fours in Macgregor's 68 not out. There were two record partnerships for the competition in the Durham innings. Mallett and Elliot put on 204 runs for the Durham second wicket, exceeding the unbroken 126 added by T Pointon and G Davenport for Cheshire in their second innings versus Worcestershire at Oxton in 1895, and Macgregor and Middlemiss added 71 for the tenth wicket, which exceeded the 67 put on for Oxfordshire by R A Williams and A Rogers in the first innings versus Berkshire at Reading in 1896. For the losers, Watts's 74 included 14 fours. In the Cambridgeshire second innings, French and Hayward put on 56 runs for the eighth wicket. The match aggregate of 745 runs was the third highest of the season, and the 35 byes and 50 extras conceded in the Durham innings were both Championship records.
