This match counted for Cambridgeshire in Championship - but not Durham who did not quaulify (individual records count)
Durham won this match at 5 pm on the second day by an innings and 142 runs, after Cambridgeshire following on 372 runs behind were dismissed twice in a day. The margin of victory was the second largest of the season. Durham's first innings score of 501-8 declared was not only the highest score of the season, but a record for the Championship, exceeding the 493-9 wickets declared by Berkshire v Hertfordshire at St Albans in 1897. Centuries were scored by Elliot, whose 139 contained 2 sixes, 22 fours, and 6 twos, and Macgregor with 123, including 17 fours, 4 threes and 13 twos. Together they put on 155 runs for the fourth wicket, which was the highest partnership for that wicket during the season. Macgregor had a fifth wicket partnership of 101 with Butler. Mallett's 62 contained 10 fours and Butler's 57 included 11 fours. Gregory took 10 wickets in the match for 101 runs, and when he dismissed Bryan in the Cambridgeshire first innings, he took his one hundredth Championship wicket.
Peers's 133 not out for Cambridgeshire included 27 fours, and 3 twos. His aggregate of 178 runs for the match was the second highest of the season. Peers and French put on 134 runs for the sixth wicket in the visitors' second innings, which was a new record for the Championship until surpassed in August by L G A Collins and A C M Croome with 203 for Berkshire against Buckinghamshire at Aylesbury. The 132 and 116 runs conceded by Hayward and O'Connor respectively in the Durham innings were the two highest single-innings totals of the season. The 41 extras conceded in the Durham innings were the most during the year. Despite making some considerable efforts to find additional opponents, by playing only four championship matches during the season -- home and away against Cambridgeshire and Norfolk -- Durham did not qualify for the final table.
[Missing: In Durham 1st inns duration of Elliot's 139 and Macgregor's 123; in Cambridgeshire 2nd inns duration of Peers's 133 not out.]
