This card comes from the Minor Counties Research Project
An improved second innings batting performance by Buckinghamshire after being 157 runs behind on the first innings made a draw inevitable. Two centuries were scored in the match, one by each side. For the visitors, there were 13 fours, 9 threes and 11 twos in Gresson's 122 not out, 15 fours in debutant Cavendish's 87, 11 fours in Saunders's 78 and 6 fours in Wright's 52 not out. There were three century partnerships in the Buckinghamshire second innings and Gresson was involved in all of them -- 131 for the first wicket with Cavendish, which was the third highest of the season for that wicket; 116 for the second with Saunders, which was also the third highest of the season for that wicket; and 118 unbroken for the fourth with Wright, which was the second highest of the season. For Hertfordshire, there were 15 fours, 2 threes and 11 twos in Golding's 108 not out and 9 fours in Field's 52. The two had a partnership of 106 for the eighth wicket, which was the highest of the season for that wicket and a new record for the Championship, exceeding the 89 put on by W East and B C Smith for Northamptonshire against Northumberland at Heaton in 1896. The match aggregate of 884 runs was the third highest of the season.
