This match counted for Norfolk in Championship - but not Durham who did not qualify (individual records count)
Durham won by an innings shortly before noon on the second day, after Norfolk followed on 100 runs behind. Whitwell, who bowled throughout both innings, took 10 wickets in the match for 85 runs. Gregory took 8 wickets for 34 runs. Gregory also top-scored in the match with 30. For Norfolk, no batsman reached twenty in either of their innings. In the Durham innings, Bathurst took 4 catches in the field, thus equalling the Championship record set by H P Justice for Oxfordshire against Wiltshire at Trowbridge in 1896, and R Smith for Norfolk against Northumberland at Norwich in 1897, and A Bird for Worcestershire against Glamorgan at Swansea in June. The feat was to be repeated by A C M Croome for Berkshire v Oxfordshire at Reading the following week. The match aggregate of 293 runs was the lowest of the season for a completed championship match. G F Blake, the selected wicket-keeper, withdrew from the Norfolk team on the morning of the match. C Pearse was telegraphed to replace Blake and arrived at the ground shortly before the lunch interval. Up to his arrival, Fryer had kept wicket for the home side.
