Northumberland won at 4.20 pm on the second day by an innings after enforcing the follow-on. For the visitors, Thompson scored 65 and Hansell 54. In the visitors' innings, Marshall and Tomlin put on 86 runs for the ninth wicket. During the Cambridgeshire first innings, Chambers dislocated a finger while fielding and Rev C J Hamilton acted as a substitute fielder.
On the first day, when Hansell had scored 24 runs in the Northumberland innings, he became the first player for his county to reach one thousand runs in the Championship. The 64 overs bowled by Hayward in the Northumberland innings were the most during the season and his 30 maidens were equal second highest.
