This card comes from the Minor Counties Research Project
This return match was drawn, as had been the game between the teams at Northampton in June. The Northumberland declaration left Northamptonshire 206 runs to win in just under an hour. For the home team, Clayton's two innings of 92 and 70 not out contained 15 fours and 10 fours respectively, while Mortimer's 69 included 9 fours. For the visitors, there were 7 fours in G J Thompson's 64. In the Northamptonshire first innings, Thompson and Pool added 56 runs for the seventh wicket. Pool strained his thigh severely by treading on the ball when fielding in the Northumberland second innings, but recovered to play next day in the match versus Durham. When he had scored 55 in the Northumberland first innings, Clayton became the second player for his county to reach the career milestone of a thousand runs in championship matches.
