Northumberland won this return match by nine wickets at 5.30 pm on the second day, after Cambridgeshire followed on 169 runs behind on first innings. The home team thus achieved the double, having also won when the two sides met at Cambridge in June. Thompson's 103 for the winners, an innings of three hours, contained 9 fours, 5 threes and 11 twos. The 40 extras conceded by Cambridgeshire in the Northumberland first innings were the most during the season.
