Northumberland won by four wickets at 6.25 pm with 5 minutes to spare after needing in their second innings 116 runs to win in one hour and 10 minutes. Amid reported scenes of considerable excitement, the victory owed much to Brown's 41. He had been struck on the body by a fast ball from Turner early on in his innings and took some minutes to recover, but afterwards paved the way for the Northumberland win. For the winners, there were 19 fours in Gillespie's 123, scored in 2 hours and twenty minutes. Anderson's 75 contained 14 fours, Gilman's 52 included 2 sixes and 8 fours, and Brown's match-winning 41 contained 1 six and 4 fours. In the Northumberland first innings Anderson and Gillespie put on 132 runs for the first wicket, and Foster and White 57 for the last wicket. For Cheshire there were 7 fours in Voss's 78 and 7 fours in Rigby's 56. The match aggregate of 1030 runs was the highest for the season. Bent injured his hand during the match, but was able to bat in the Cheshire second innings.
