Staffordshire won by four wickets before lunch on the second day. They had required in their second innings 84 runs to win with the whole of the second day to score them. Showers delayed the start of play on the second day by half an hour. In the first Northumberland innings the first six wickets fell at the same total of 21 which as far is known has never happened before or since in a Championship match. For the winners, Barnes took 16 wickets in the match for 93 runs, a new record for the competition, taking 8 wickets for 38 runs in the first innings and 8 for 55 in the second., which was statistically the second best match bowling performance of the season. A crowd of 2000 was estimated to be present on the first day.
