Staffordshire won by an innings and five runs on the second day, after Durham followed on 259 runs behind on first innings. The start of play on the second day was delayed an hour by rain. For the winners, there were 7 fours in Brigg's 56. In the Durham first innings, Barnes took 8 wickets for 16 runs. In the Durham first innings, the last seven wickets fell for 3 runs. For the losers, there were 11 fours in Turnbull's 113, an innings of three hours and 20 minutes. There were 11 fours in H Brooks's 77. In the Durham second innings H Brooks and Turnbull put on 131 runs for the second wicket. It was estimated that 2,000 spectators were present on the first day. Briggs was ill on the second day and T A Bulmer was the substitute fielder.
