This card comes from the Minor Counties Research Project - research is continuing on this scorecard which can be expected to change.
This match was drawn after the Northumberland declaration left Staffordshire a victory target of 256 runs in 90 minutes. The crowd barracked Gillespie, the Northumberland captain, for not declaring earlier. The Northern Echo reported "The crowd were insistent in their demands for a declaration, but it was not until Stratton had made a farce of the game by placing his men all in the long field, taking about a hundred yards run and bowling underhand lobs, that the desired result was effected." For Northumberland, there were 9 fours in Gillespie's 67. For Staffordshire, Vost's 52 contained 4 fours and Stratton's 51 lasted 90 minutes and included 4 fours. In the Staffordshire first innings, these two batsmen added 105 runs for the fourth wicket. On the second day O Richardson kept wicket for Northumberland as Ullathorne injured his hand. Attendance was given as well over 3,000 on the first day and nearly 3,000 on the second day.
