This return match was won by Durham by 299 runs at 4.15 pm on the second day. The visitors had required in their second innings 411 runs to win. The match between the two sides at Jesmond in May had been won by Northumberland. For the winners, there were 2 sixes and 16 fours in Adamson's 116. There were 12 fours in Pickersgill's 65 and 1 six and 8 fours in Hendren's 60. In the match, Thackeray took 10 wickets for 92 runs, including 8 for 40 in the Northumberland first innings, and Morris took 8 wickets for 118 runs, including 7 for 51 in the Northumberland second innings. For the losers, there were 12 fours in Norbury's 80. He also took 8 wickets in the match for 159 runs. In the Durham second innings Adamson and Pickersgill added 154 runs for the third wicket. The match receipts were over £120, a new record for a Durham county match.
