This card comes from the Minor Counties Research Project - research is continuing on this scorecard which can be expected to change.
Monmouthshire won this return match by an innings and 209 runs on the second day. Monmouthshire had also won the match when the two sides had met at Llanelly in June. The margin of victory was the second largest of the season for a team batting second. [It was the first time in the Championship that a team had won a match losing only two wickets - check]. The match started 45 minutes late at 12.15 pm on the first day. Heavy rain on the second prevented any play before 3.30 pm, so Monmouthshire declared at their overnight score. For the winners, there were 23 fours in Silverlock's 146. He also took 9 wickets in the match for 45 runs. Giles's 93 not out contained 12 fours. In the Monmouthshire innings, Silverlock and Stratton put on 127 runs for the first wicket, and Silverlock and Giles added 142 runs for the second wicket. For the losers, the joint top-scorers were Lockyer and James with 14. Wheldon bowled 12 no balls in the Monmouthshire innings with runs being scored off 8 of them. This was the first use of the ground for a Championship match.
