Staffordshire won this match by 10 wickets at 4.45 pm on the second day. There was a delayed start on the first day, as the visitors' train from Crewe did not reach Stoke until 11.46 am. The match was considerably interfered with by rain, which saw a late start also on the second day when play did not start until 2.30 pm.
Just over one hour into Tuesday's play and Staffordshire were left with 72 to get for victory, which they got without losing a wicket in exactly an hour's play. In their first innings Monmouthshire were bowled out for 39 in exactly one hour with the last man J H Evans absent as he had not yet reached the ground. Staffordshire were also struggling at 27 for 8 wickets, with Williams at the time having figures of 11-8-3-5. Brammer and Griffith then added an invaluable 24 runs for the ninth wicket to give Staffordshire a first innings lead. For the winners Barnes took 13 wickets in the match for 51 runs, including 6 wickets for 17 runs in Monmouthshire's first innings and 7 wickets for 34 runs in their second;
Barnes and Wilson operated throughout the match, with 18 of their 19 wickets being bowled.
For the losers W A Williams took 7 wickets for 11 runs in Staffordshire's first innings.
