Due to bad weather on the second day, play did not start until 3.25 pm and was abandoned after only half an hour. It was therefore impossible to reach a decision on the first innings in this return match. Earlier in the season Staffordshire had beaten Monmouthshire by 10 wickets. For the visitors Taylor's knock of 103 lasted for 2¾ hours and included 4 fours, 10 threes and 16 twos whilst Wilson's 56 contained 1 six and 1 four. The slow outfield had meant that boundaries were hard to come by. After the first over in Monmouthshire's innings they were 0-3, Barnes getting wickets with his second, fifth and sixth balls. For the hosts Raikes took 5 wickets for 88 runs whilst only Geen and F G Phillips reached double figures.
